In many markets across the world, people come to buy and sell, meet relatives, hear news, settle debts, and earn the money that keeps their families alive. Yet the market can also hold stories that have remained among the people for generations.
Market Mysteries of the Dead is a series of novels written by Kevin Woodard about the mysteries found within these old places of trade.
Each book enters a different market, community, and period of history. Traders open their stalls in the morning. Women prepare their goods. Customers bargain over prices. Healers, diviners, elders, strangers, and children move among them. Life continues as people have always known it.
Then something happens that cannot easily be explained.
A dead person may return. An old promise may demand payment. A trader may discover that something followed her home. A family may learn that a death from many years ago was never properly settled. What begins as an ordinary market day can open a matter between the living, the ancestors, and those who died without finding rest.
These stories are grounded in the histories, customs, beliefs, and everyday lives of the communities where they take place.
MARKET MYSTERIES OF THE DEAD

Some people leave the market carrying what they bought. Others leave carrying what followed them home.
