Born into a family that despises her, Anula grows up as the unwanted daughter of three. Her mother treats her like a maid servant. To escape her pain, Anula paints portraits of women with the beauty she longs to possess. Then, after a night of despair and a desire to end her life she awakens to find the most beautiful woman she has ever painted sitting beside her bed.

Set in the Kingdom of Kandy during eighteenth-century Sri Lanka, Chandrawathi: The Portrait on the Wall is a historical novel that portrays the Sinhalese village life, Buddhist traditions, ancestral beliefs, family cruelty, and the unseen spiritual world that filters into a emotional story of desire, misplaced identity, and the terrible cost of changing one’s destiny.
