Description
In the early 14th century, the riverine village of Kampong in Temasek (known today as Singapore) lived under the rule of Chief Hongkai. His rule was marked by cruelty, greed, and endless demands on the people he was chosen by to protect. Families struggled against famine, torrential rains caused floods, and they were forced to pay tribute, while any sign of defiance from them was crushed without mercy.
Among the villagers was Zen, a farmer devoted to his wife Yongwei and their children. When disaster struck and his harvest was swept away by the flood, he discovered his wife’s prudent foresight. She had saved grain for survival. But their reprieve was short lived. Hongkai’s men seized what little remained for them, and when Zen fought to protect his family, it cost him his life.
Left a widow, Yongwei faced an impossible choice; submit to the chief’s claim over her or risk everything to protect her children. Her resolve to resist set in motion a journey across the forest and the sea, a struggle against men who would hunt her, and an encounter with forces that transcended death itself.
Through courage, sacrifice, and the mysterious guidance of a spiritual monk named Muzzammill, Yongwei’s story unfolds across realms of the living and the dead. What began as a fight for survival becomes a tale of eternal reunion, where family bonds prove stronger than tyranny and even stronger than time.
A Resting Place is a historical fantasy of loss, endurance, and transcendence. For readers who seek more than legend, it offers a timeless account of love’s defiance against oppression.
