Description
In the forests of 19th century Oyem, within a secluded village in northern Gabon near the borders of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, a family’s serene becomes consumed by insecurity, betrayal, and the vengeance of unseen spirits.
When Nguema, a young man of common birth, defies local tradition to marry Oyone, the cherished daughter of a wealthy farmer, their love seemed to triumph over status. But the promise of happiness turns bittersweet when a second wife is chosen to enter the household named Assele, a woman whose beauty conceals a heart driven by envy and the hunger for power.
Assele’s desperate struggle to secure her place as a sister-wife in a divided home draws her into a pact with the dark waters of Mami Wata, the ancient goddess in the river lands of the Gabonese forest. One by one, misfortune strikes, and the villagers begins to speak of curses and witchcraft. Beneath the still surface of the river, debts are owed, and every act of cruelty has its debts and consequences.
Set against the landscape of precolonial Central Africa, Slave of Mami Wata is a tale of love, pride, and spiritual justice where the living and the dead, the innocent and the guilty, are bound by the river’s eternal watch.
